“The power savings are very significant with ALSI LEDs vs. the original lighting. In addition to this savings, our repair and labor costs have been reduced due to the minimal maintenance requirements of the LEDs.”

City offers LED advice
The Borough of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania faced high power costs from 796 inefficient, cobra head street lights. The borough also confronted extensive maintenance time and costs managing repairs for these outdated street lights.
Ellwood City turned to ALSI to provide cutting-edge, cost-efficient LED street lighting for the community. Ellwood City implemented ALSI’s innovative, 66 watt LEDs to replace 135 of the town’s 796 outdated street lights, including power-hogging 250 watt high-pressure sodium street lamps and 175 watt mercury vapor lights.
“A terrific and unique aspect of this LED technology is its capability to power up or down as needed,” said Ellwood City Borough Manager Dom Viccari. “For example, the new LED lights have the ability to go to half power after 2 a.m. until early morning, allowing for additional energy savings. We have been able to maximize savings by using this technology.”
The power reductions have been dramatic with the ALSI LEDs. One of the original 250 watt high-pressure sodium street lamps used as much as 66 kilowatts a month. In comparison, the innovative 66 watt LEDs now use as little as 3 kilowatts per month.
Ellwood City plans to invest the cost savings from the initial installation of 135 LEDs into upgrading the balance of Ellwood City’s older street lights. The Ellwood City project is one of the longest running street light projects in the United States.
“This aspect of LED installation makes the choice a very logical business decision,” said Robert Stone, President of Innovative Energy Technologies (IET). IET is the manufacturer’s representative for ALSI and sells all of ALSI’s products through a distribution network throughout the United States. “In addition to being sound for the environment and visually pleasing, the end result of LED installation is zero cost based on savings over time, and continued savings into the future.”
“In addition to the power and maintenance cost savings, Ellwood City is proud and pleased to help spur growth of the energy-efficient lighting industry in the region as an important green business sector for the area’s economy,” said Mr. Viccari.
